Library copies of the kinky bestseller were found to carry traces of the HERPES virus and COCAINE.
Scientists made the shocking discovery after testing the ten most frequently borrowed books on the shelf.
Another romance, Tango, by Pieter Asper, was also found to be carrying herpes, while all ten tested positive for cocaine.

Your consciousness or behaviour won’t change as a result of reading Fifty Shades of Grey
The chemical analysis was carried out by a team from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium.
Jan Tytgat, a professor of toxicology, said the residue on the books were too small to be seriously harmful to readers.
He said: “The levels found won’t have a pharmacological effect.
“Your consciousness or behaviour won’t change as a result of reading the tomes.”
Previous studies have found that highly sought after library books have 25-40% more microbes on them than less borrowed ones.
The second team based in Utah counted spots of bacterial growth on the cover.
Researcher Joshua Nicholson explained: “We just counted them all up … ‘one, two, three, OK, there are 16 spots … ew, gross.'”
The 50 Shades of Grey movie, adapted from the EL James novel, will be released in February 2015 and is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
After a long-running controversy over the cast, actor Jamie Dornan has been confirmed in the lead role of Christian Grey with 24-year-old Dakota Johnson selected to play Anastasia Steele.
Even though the film doesn’t enter production until next month, Johnson last week dressed up as the virgin, college student for the movie’s first publicity pictures for US mag Entertainment Weekly.
The former “Ben and Kate” star claimed she has dreamt of playing Anastasia since she first heard about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie – although she admits she hadn’t even read the book, which has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide, at that time.
Johnson added: “I think it’s an incredible love story and that’s why it’s affected so many people.
EL James did a really good job of explaining how that just can happen sometimes and you have this chemical pull to someone.
“Adding in the sex makes it perfect. Sometimes you feel a little bit naughty and that’s okay.”
British star Charlie Hunnam announced he was leaving the Fifty Shades of Grey movie last month due to ‘scheduling conflicts’.
EL James claimed she was shocked by his decision but added: “It was disappointing, but it is what it is.
“I wish him well. And now we have Jamie Dornan and that’s great.
“It’s been interesting with Jamie, the fan reaction has been so positive.”
Dornan admitted he will have to head to the gym to improve his body before getting fully naked for the role.
He said: “I’ve never felt that Christian needs to be some kind of monster, but I think it’s very clear how he conditions himself and looks after himself.
“Obviously I’m gonna up it with training, but we don’t have any intention to really bulk up. I don’t think it’s appropriate.”
