Geeky dad lets Internet pick daughter’s name

A Canadian couple is doing the unnamable — asking the Internet to name their baby girl.

Stephen McLaughlin, of Kelowna, British Columbia, started a site called NameMyDaughter.com, where anyone can vote on his daughter’s first and middle names.

But he and his wife are reserving veto power, so his daughter isn’t christened something ridiculous like WackyTaco692.

“I came home from work one day and it (the idea) just popped into my head. When I saw the domain was available I knew it was meant to be,” McLaughlin told the Daily News.

Names of sexually transmitted diseases and sexual positions have been censored, Stephen McLaughlin says.

McLaughlin, a self-proclaimed Web developer by day and geeky father by night, says he built the website using PHP. The leading contender is Amelia Mae.

The little girl’s expected birthdate is April 2, 2014.

McLaughlin said he “can’t wait to hold her in my arms for the first time. And eventually tell her this crazy story.”

This will be his first kid, but his wife already has two wonderful children whom he loves very much.

So far, the leading contender for his daughter’s name is Amelia Mae, Stephen McLaughlin says.

McLaughlin’s family is still offering suggestions for the girl’s name — by voting just like everyone else.

“My family hasn’t really weighed in too much,” he said. “They are active voters though they will not tell me what for.”

His brother was a little late to the party and only learned about the site last night, he said.

Overall, the submissions have been surprisingly respectful with a sprinkling a humorous names like Streetlamp Le’ Moose.

McLaughlin has only had to censor a handful of names that he didn’t want on the list, such as sexual transmitted diseases and sexual positions.

Asking the Internet for help naming anything is a risky move: A summer 2012 contest called “Dub the Dew” gave Web browsers the chance to pick a name for a new green-apple flavored Mountain Dew beverage. The contest was called off after 4chan users flooded the polls with votes for “Hitler did nothing wrong,” “Gushing Granny” and “diabeetus.”
