Coca-Cola created an uplifting ad to remind people that the good in the world outweighs the bad.

However, instead of raising the spirits of some viewers, the version of the advert that aired in Ireland elicited criticism.

The Irish edition of the “Reasons to Believe” ad does not have the clip of two men taking pictures after their wedding that is included in versions from the UK, Norway and the Netherlands.

Instead, that scene is replaced with a clip of an interracial couple’s nuptials.

“Not cool Coca Cola Ireland!” Dublin Pride tweeted in response to the ad.

A Coca-Cola spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that the ads were adjusted for each country based on consumer research. The company did not include the same-sex ceremony in the Irish ad because gay marriage is not legal in the country, the spokesperson continued.

“The core objective is that the vignettes in the ad resonate with people in each country and that they are truly representative of cultural issues that they are familiar with and value,” the spokesperson said.

EILE Magazine, an LGBT-focused Irish publication, reported that the footage actually came from a same-sex union ceremony in Australia, another country that does not legally recognize gay marriage.
