Boone Logan, a key piece of the Yankees’ bullpen the last three seasons, is off to Colorado.

In his first chance at free agency, Boone Logan took the high road. The mile-high road.

For three seasons a major component of the Yankees’ bullpen, Logan has signed a three-year deal with the Rockies that will pay him $ 16.5 million according to CBSSports.com.

Logan played four seasons with the Yankees – usually used as a situational lefty but sometimes pitching entire innings – and threw 176 innings to a 3.38 ERA. This past season, he was 5-2 with a 3.23 ERA and 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings but was little help to the Yanks in the final month. Logan had bone spurs in his elbow; he joins the Rockies coming off surgery.

The Yankees have leaned heavily on Logan during his last three years in pinstripes, using him in 205 games. In 2012 he led the majors with 80 appearances.

Colorado has made improving its bullpen one of the cornerstones of its offseason plan. The Rockies already signed Ex-Met LaTroy Hawkins for $ 2.5 million plus an option for 2015 with the expectation he will serve as the team’s closer.

Logan joined the Yankees in the winter of 2009 as part of the deal to acquire Javier Vazquez.
