A massive, walk-in closet in the loft in Williamsburg’s Gretsch Building that is selling for a potential Brooklyn record $ 6.5 million
Locals have been complaining about the Manhattanization of Williamsburg for years, and now the hip neighborhood even has the real estate prices to match.
A massive loft at the Gretsch Building along Broadway has just come on the market for $ 6.5 million — the kind of coin that still picks up a decent-sized pad in Tribeca or Soho.
If the place sells for even close to that, it would be by far the most expensive apartment in Williamsburg, or even Brooklyn. The current record is held by a penthouse at the Edge on the waterfront, which went for a relatively meager $ 3 million in June. In Park Slope, a Prospect Park West penthouse went for $ 5.1 million in 2008.
Real estate pros are skeptical as to whether this whopper is really worth $ 1,800 per square foot, a price 50% higher than anything else in the building and well above the neighborhood average.

“I guess for the right family moving from Manhattan, it might seem like a bargain,” appraiser Jonathan Miller said. “But compared to everything else in the neighborhood, it’s a lot to ask.”
But broker Arina Yakobi of Douglas Elliman swears this 3,800-square-foot home is well worth it.
“It’s an unparalleled unit in the hottest neighborhood on the planet,” she said. “There’s nothing else like it, in terms of size and views.”

That’s hard to argue with.

The spread is located on the building’s top floor, below the penthouse 50 Cent once allegedly crashed, and has panoramic views of the Williamsburg Bridge and Manhattan through north-, west- and south-facing windows.
“It’s almost like the city is sitting in the palm of your hand,” Yakobi said.
It’s all possible thanks to the combination of two neighboring apartments, purchased by businessman Mark Altman for a total of $ 2.9 million in 2007 and 2010, according to city records .
He then spent $ 1 million combining the units, according to Yakobi.
One of the six bedrooms was turned into a massive walk-in closet, perfect for Burg fashionistas. Each of six bathrooms features a different treatment of floor-to-ceiling mosaic and marble. Original columns from the former guitar factory give the space its distinctively lofty feel.
The Gretsch has star power, too. Rapper Busta Rhymes once owned a place here, and “Girls” creator Lena Dunham recently checked out the penthouse, on the market for $ 4.25 million.
