As if Stephen A. Cohen’s year couldn’t get any worse, the hedge fund titan just knocked $ 17 million off the price of his opulent East Side apartment.

The infamous financier, whose company pleaded guilty to insider trading last month and will pay $ 1.2 billion in fines, dropped the price on his 9,000-square-foot duplex atop the Bloomberg Tower from $ 115 million to the still-conspicuous $ 98 million.

That just makes it the fourth most expensive property listing in the city — but it dashes Cohen’s dreams of selling the first nine-figure apartment in city history.

A half-dozen homes have been vying to break the $ 100 million barrier this year, but none has found a buyer at that stratospheric price.

With two offices, five bathrooms, and plenty of space, the apartment is perfect for a businessman who likes to entertain.

Cohen’s couldn’t either. It’s a grand spread in a top building, but it’s also on Lexington Ave. — not the most fashionable address.

Still, the Bloomberg Tower, also known as One Beacon Court, has surpassed expectations, with residents included Beyonce, NBC anchor Brian Williams and sluggers Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu.

Cohen’s pad is inarguably the nicest, and certainly the biggest. It’s the only duplex in the building, comprising the western half of the 51st and 52nd floors.

Cohen bought two units for $ 25.9 million in 2005, and then spent untold millions more having Charles Gwathmey combine them into an uber-luxe spread.

The condo has sweeping views of Central Park, two offices, four bedrooms, and five and a half bathrooms tiled with huge slabs of statuary marble.

Cohen is selling after downsizing to a $ 23.4 million maisonette at The Abingdon, a throwback condo development in the West Village. The three-story home covers 9,600 square feet.

Cohen also recently bought a $ 62.5 million mansion on seven East Hampton acres this spring — the biggest deal on the East End this year.

He also owns a 35,000-square-foot Greenwich, Conn. compound that’s worth tens of millions of bucks.
