Moodies Record and Tape has been a musical mecca for more than three decades, but the neighborhood landmark will soon be changing locations to increase foot traffic.

“Part of the reason we are successful is that we are willing to change,” says store owner Earl Moodie. “We never limit ourselves. Take the top 10 CDs that any record store carries and we look beyond that. We look in 360 degrees.”

Ditching the hallowed ground at 225th St. and White Plains Road isn’t ideal, but customers said they understood it was a sign of the times.
“Record shops are closing,” said David Smith, 53, who has shopped at Moodies for over 12 years. “There are people who love the business like Mr. Moodie, who try to hold on and hold on, but how long can you hold on?”

Moodie hopes the inroads he has made with the community will also help keep the store afloat.

“News travels fast, and we’ve gotten a lot of support from well-wishers,” he said. “Over the years, we have become a mother and father to our customers. We became a part of the community, not just taking from the community. It’s bigger than dollars and cents.”

Moodie believes the move will enable the store to remain a cultural hub.
“It’s going to take a long while, but this place will always be remembered. I’m looking forward to where we are going now, and I think we carry that history with us.”
