Baby Olivia Marie died after five days on life support.
A 5-day-old baby from Texas died after her skull and spine were cracked with forceps during delivery.

Parents Rachel Melancon and fiance Allen Coats held a funeral for their little girl on Saturday.
Melancon, who stands at just 4-foot-11, had asked her doctor — George T. Backardjiev of the Medical Center of Southeast Texas — for a cesarean section due to her small frame and the size of the baby.

But Backardjiev cautioned against this, saying that would leave her with a scar, mother-in-law Angie Coats told ABC News.

During a labor that lasted more than 18 hours, Olivia’s heart rate increased, but still her mother was told to wait.
Backardjiev told the woman her the baby was facing the wrong way and tried to turn Olivia Marie with his hands.

Melancon (right) alleges she had initially asked for a cesarean birth for her daughter, but obstetrician George T. Backardjiev refused, using forceps to pull the girl out.
When this failed, they used forceps.
“(Backardjiev) kept going and even put his foot up not the bed trying to pull,” said Angie Coats.
“When he touched the top and side of the skull, we heard a pop, like clay cracking in pottery and heard her skull crush.”

Olivia Marie’s parents allege they heard her skull crack and that her spine was broken during the forceps birth.
Ironically, Rachel was then rushed off for an emergency cesarean. However, when tiny Olivia was finally delivered, she was unable to breathe. She had suffered numerous fractures.
“I felt her pulled out of me and the room was silent. No crying baby and they told Allen to leave the room. That’s the last I remember before waking up to my baby girl lifeless,” posted Rachel on Facebook.
The baby’s heart valve, and tissue behind her legs and knees were donated to save another baby’s life and for skin grafts, respectively.
The Medical Center of Southeast Texas is carrying out a review and expressed its “sympathies” to the family.

Melancon and Coats are not campaigning to have forceps births banned after they suffered the loss of their daughter.
The parents plan to sue the Backardjiev.

“We’re not mad at the hospital, this is not their fault,” said Angie Coats. “It is one man’s fault.”
They have launched a Facebook campaign to warn about the danger of forceps.
At the memorial service on Saturday, balloons were released in memory of the baby.
The grieving parents called it “the most beautiful thing ever.”
