Vodka company spices up line with Sriracha

Sriracha chili sauce bottles are produced at the Huy Fong Foods factory in Irwindale, Calif., on Tuesday, Oct 29, 2013. The maker of Sriracha hot sauce is under fire for allegedly fouling the air around its Southern California production site. The city of Irwindale filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Monday asking a judge to stop production at the Huy Fong Foods factory, claiming the chili odor emanating from the facility is a public nuisance. The vodka isn’t made with hot sauce from Huy Fong Foods, the California-based company that was recently ordered to temporarily shut down production of its famous hot sauce because area residents were complaining of watery eyes and breathing problems.

The flavor, a proprietary blend created by Phillips, does have a lot in common with the familiar red condiment: it’s spicy but not overwhelmingly hot, smells a bit like garlic, have a vinegar kick and a surprisingly sweet finish. In a press release, the company explained the sauce was modeled after the traditional condiment, which comes from Si Racha, Thailand.
