The future Mr. and Mrs. McCutchen: Andrew McCutchen and girlfriend Maria Hanslovan. The top hat was a gift from Ellen DeGeneres.
Andrew McCutchen wanted an extension on his four-year relationship with girlfriend Maria Hanslovan and that’s just what he got.
The Pirates center fielder — and National League MVP — popped the question on the “Ellen” show on Wednesday, complete with a video that draws parallels between their relationship and baseball.
“When I hit a home run it’s a home run, but there’s a bigger picture behind it,” McCutchen says over a montage of his play for the Pirates. “Going to first, going to second, going to third and going home; with each base that I touch, it means a year.”
McCutchen then chronicles his relationship with Hanslovan — including bumps in the road in the second year — and says that when he reaches third base and looks home he knows that she’s always there waiting for him.
At this point in the video, the cat is out of the bag and when it wraps up, Ellen DeGeneres gestures for Hanslovan to come down from the crowd and join McCutchen on the stage.

Andrew McCutchen has a special surprise for one guest in the audience on the ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ Wednesday.
“I always envisioned that I would be on the highest mountain in the world and that my voice would be as loud as a lion’s roar — times a billion — so the whole world could hear me, just to tell you how much that I love you,” McCutchen said.
“I didn’t do any of this for the publicity, I didn’t do any of this for the recognition. I did this to show you that if I could tell the whole world how much I love you, I would do that.”

He then digs into his jacket pocket, gathers himself, drops to one knee and asks her to marry him.
She, of course, said yes.

After some hugging and longing looks, Ellen breaks in and hands over a bouquet of roses for Hanslovan and a black top hat for McCutchen with the Pirates’ gold “P” on the front and “Mr. 22” on the back.
His teammates, undoubtedly, can’t wait to rib their romantic teammate when spring training begins.
