A young Frenchman was so drunk it took him over a mile to realize he had taken a wrong turn and was driving on train tracks by mistake.

A drunk French driver phoned police to tell them he was lost, after driving along train tracks for over a mile.

The 30-year-old had been out partying in the Dordogne, southwestern France.

Driving home, he took a wrong turn and ended up driving along train tracks before calling the police for help. It took him over a mile before he realized what he was doing.

According to French Radio station RTL, he phoned from near the town of Villefranche-du-Perigord to tell officers he was “lost.”

RTL said he only realized what he was driving along when one of his car’s wheels was balanced on one of the rails.

Luckily for the driver, he escaped unharmed. However, rail travellers in the region were not so fortunate as services were disrupted as his car was cleared from the tracks.

He will appear in court in February.
