“I have picked up more used condoms (in dressing rooms) than I would care to count,” an unnamed retail worker said.
Some shoppers leave behind more than unwanted clothing in dressing rooms.
An unnamed retail veteran spoke to AllOverAlbany.com about some of the disgusting, disheartening and disturbing things she has come across in her 16-year career. During her time at six different stores in the Albany, N.Y., area, she has caught shoppers getting it on instead of trying on, found numerous used rubbers and dealt with many angry customers.

The anonymous woman said she didn’t realize that a fitting room at a young women’s clothing store where she worked was a notorious hookup spot until she heard about it on the radio. She asked her coworkers about it, and they confirmed the rumor.
“Before that, they didn’t tell me that they had found condoms and other things that you use while having sex because they knew I would freak out,” she told AOA.

The worker added, “I have picked up more used condoms than I would care to count.”
She also listed a slew of other less-than-sanitary things that go on behind those closed doors.

“Fitting rooms are also sometimes used for children to go number 2,” she said. “I have walked in and found little gifts for me. People have used fitting rooms to change diapers and left them there.”
The manager said she caught a couple in the act once, and told everyone else that they needed to leave the fitting rooms because of a “health situation.”

“People obviously were not happy, but they knew what was going on because they could hear it,” she explained. “And once things were done I very politely knocked on the door and said, ‘You guys have to go.’ It was one of those ‘I know what you did, don’t come back’ things.”
In addition to the condoms and the diapers, there are also the rude, inpatient customers.
“A lot of adults don’t realize that the kid behind the counter is maybe 17 or 18 years old or maybe college age,” she said. “And when you curse them out when they can’t give you a full refund for something you wore for three years… that’s someone’s daughter or son.”
But it’s not all bad, she explained. A lot of the shoppers are great, and she said she likes engaging with people as well as the fashion aspect.
“Clothing makes you feel confident, and that is what I like most about the clothing aspect of retail: that you get to make those people feel confident,” she said.
