Peter Bogdanovich, who’s in New York directing “Squirrel to the Nuts,” starring Jennfer Aniston, is said to be frail, but that claim may be aimed at shrinking the film crew to save time and money.
Peter Bogdanovich is being fiercely protected on the set of “Squirrels to the Nuts,” which he is currently directing in New York — but it may be a ploy to save money on set, sources exclusively tell Confidenti@l.
The 73-year-old actor/director/producer has been filming the rom-com around New York City since early July.
On July 12, the movie’s cinematographer, Yaron Orbach, wrote a letter to IATSE (the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States) Local 161 in New York, asking the union for permission to do double duty as both cinematographer and camera B operator during filming — which would save time and money during filming.
The problem is, Orbach used Bogdanovich’s age and fictional ailing health as the excuse. Confidenti@l has obtained the controversial letter from an on-set source.
“It should be mentioned that Mr. Bogdanovich is an older gentleman with limited mobility and in an effort to protect him on set we would like to keep the crew who he must interact with, down to a comfortable level,” Orbach wrote.
“It is a concern for production that he is not capable of communicating his choices to many people — especially those with whom he has not formed a strong familiarity during our prep time. His strength is not at full capacity and all of our efforts will be made to bring his vision to the screen by supporting him during a busy production schedule. If we can lessen the burden by reducing the steps of communication I believe we will have a successful project.”
Our source tells us that it’s a very odd letter, considering Bogdanovich is at the top of his game and is very intelligent and cordial to everyone on the set.
“He’s certainly not incapacitated,” the source says.
The movie, starring Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Cybill Shepherd, Eugene Levy and Jason Schwartzman, will film in the city for 29 days in all. Aniston has been spotted filming at various locations around town, sporting odd outfits and bad wigs. She plays a prostitute-turned-actress who meets a successful, but married, Broadway director who tries to advance her career.
Bogdanovich had revealed that he’s filming the movie digitally, calling it “extraordinary.”
